As co-editor alongside Jaym Gates for Strange California, I wore multiple creative hats to bring this ambitious anthology to life, serving as layout artist, cover designer, interior designer, and illustrator. The project, which successfully launched through Kickstarter and was published by Falstaff Books/StoryJitsu in August 2017, brought together 26 acclaimed authors including Seanan McGuire, Tim Pratt, Laura Anne Gilman, and Nancy Holder to explore the unique mythologies and historical strangeness of the Golden State. Beyond curating and editing this diverse collection of stories that blend history and future, myth and science—from tarantula migrations to cherry-blossom technology—I crafted the book's complete visual identity, designing both the evocative cover and interior layouts while creating original illustrations that complemented Galen Dara's artwork. The anthology's design needed to capture California's paradoxical nature as a place where, as the introduction notes, "strangeness suggests a more lasting difference," and my work across editing, design, and illustration helped create a cohesive visual and narrative experience that honored both the state's complex history and its role as a perpetual frontier of commercial dreams and social experimentation.Retry
